![]() Home Groups Many members of the church belong to one of a number of home groups. Some meet during the day, others in the evening. All ages from teenage upwards are welcome, ( yes, there is even a group for teenagers!). Home groups are as they say – they meet in someone’s home. All the groups provide the opportunity for people to get to know each other, and to talk about the things that matter to them. Bible study, and prayer, discussion, fun and food all mix to provide a safe place to grow in our relationship with one another, and with God. All groups welcome new people. If you would be interested in coming along, do speak to anyone you know who belongs to a group already, or contact the clergy or Parish Office.
![]() St. Mary's Ringers 8pm Tuesdays
The St Mary's ringers are a mixed group of people, of all ages trying to master the skills of campanology. Bell ringing is a centuries old tradition of making a peal of bells sound out to remind people to come to church, announce to the world a new marriage or a celebration or any other important event such as the arrival of a new year and in 2012 the Olympics! Ringing at High Ongar started over 400 years ago and today we practice on Tuesdays at 8pm in preparation for ringing on events as described.
We always have a laugh as we struggle to master what is not easy to do! Controlling half a ton of swinging metal with one rope and stopping it from striking its note the same time as others is no mean feat!
First one has to learn the skill of controlling the bell to sound when you want it to and then you learn to ring with others so that the order of bells striking the note is in a different position every strike. Then it gets really complicated as we learn to ring more complex tunes or methods as they are called by bell ringers.
If you like a challenge and the same time laugh, get fit, and enjoy a sociable evening come and join us to watch, climb the tower, to see what we do and maybe have a go.
